So what do I do now? I remember the SAG AFTRA strike of 2000. The strike prevented advertisers from using union actors and voiceover talent for six months. It was long enough for the ad industry to find a way to work around the union by taking their projects to Canada, using nonunion talent, and utilizing the emerging technologies of the Internet. When the strike ended, there was a new way of working, some good, some bad, and the business was never the same.

I see the coronavirus creating a similar paradigm shift, a new way of looking at the world, a new way of working, a change of consciousness, and a new way of treating each other. The world is full of chaos and uncertainty right now, but there’s one thing I’ve noticed over and over in history and my life. Chaos isn’t a permanent state. In time the world will settle into a new normal. I just need a good pair of metaphorical binoculars to see it.
