Listen to the Crows

Del Monte Forest, Monterey, California

I was walking on a path through the Del Monte forest when a crow flew over and landed in a pine tree, screaming intently like it was sounding an alarm. Immediately, it was joined by many others, a murder, all yelling at something happening on the ground. They were more intense than I’d witnessed before as if they were personally being assaulted. That’s how sensitive they are; they can feel each other to that fierce degree. But we’re the same way. If you saw someone being assaulted you’d scream a warning, try to call for help, alert others. That’s what we’re seeing now with climate change. We feel what’s happening, so we’re calling out, sounding the alarm, warning off the threat. It’s millions of years of evolution telling us what must be done––Just ask the crows.
