I worked with Andy Johns (producer, Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones), we were recording a band, and I kept reaching up and tweaking the drum sound, a bit more high on the cymbals or a little more thump on the kick drum.  Andy called me out for it, “what are you doing?… you’re just touching knobs!! If you want the cymbals brighter make them brighter”  and he reached over and turned the high-end knob all the way to the right.

That always stuck with me. Be aggressive and decisive. Making a lot of small little adjustments that don’t contribute is just distracting and wastes everyone’s time.  It’s a way of hiding from your responsibilities.
