The Japanese have a word, wabi-sabi, which means finding beauty in the imperfection of life and the cycle of growth and decay. It’s a charming idea. The more something is used the more beautiful and valuable it becomes. In English, we use the word patina, but it has a negative facet to it. Even though we don’t have a good English word for wabi-sabi, we have a deep appreciation for it. The beauty and charm we feel when we walk into an old hotel or restaurant with the original furnishings, the crowds drawn to antique car shows, and the countless museums are proof of it. Now, if we could only do as well with our appreciation of the natural patina on people.
