A few years ago, I started experimenting with different ways to set the table. Silverware on top and bottom, crossing the knife and fork, rolling the napkin, the endless possibilities surprised me. How could something so simple have so many options, and why have we settled on one way as the right way. How does it benefit us? There are only twelve notes in western music, and by varying their length and combination, we’ve created all the melodies and harmonies ever written. But there are notes between the notes. I live within the narratives of my own life, the stories that define my past, my experiences, beliefs, and political leanings. What would happen if I opened myself up to the endless possibilities of a new narrative, changing the way I perceive and think, my opinions and assertions, looking deeper, past thought, a new note … stepping into an unchained future and the endless possibilities of dinnerware.
