When something isn’t working in the recording studio, it can be a task to figure out what’s wrong. The first thing we do is follow the signal flow from one point to another until we find the breakpoint, but often this technique fails, and the issue can get complicated. When complicated comes into my mind, I go back to the beginning and check the basics: is it plugged in, is it turned on, are the knobs and switches in the right place. That usually fixes it; however, occasionally, there is still a problem.
This can happen when there are two or more things wrong, and I end up chasing my tail until I figure it out. And sometimes the gear is broken, and repair or replacement is the only option. Replacement can be a silver bullet. It fixes the problem, but it’s also an opportunity to embrace new technology, to create a vibrant future, and to move forward with renewed confidence. With the hopelessly defective, replacement is the only option.
